The Fresh Air Project is the only Smokefree/Vapefree project in New Zealand which works specifically with the hospitality industry.
The project supports venues who volunteer to make their outdoor dining area Smokefree and join us on the journey to help reach the goal of Smokefree Aotearoa 2025.
- Let’s do this together to protect everyone from second hand smoke and to support those who may be on the road to quit smoking!
- Let’s do it so our children are able to enjoy the fresh air in the future!

Benefits of Smoke/Vapefree outdoor dining:
- Customers prefer smokefree dining. Taranaki residents want smokefree/vapefree outdoor dining – 64% of people surveyed recently around Taranaki said that they would be more likely to revisit an outdoor dining venue if they were smokefree/vapefree
- Creates a healthy environment for staff and customers. Patrons and staff are exposed to harmful levels of secondhand smoke that drifts inside. There is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke
- Protects our children. Smokefree areas help to reduce exposure of young people to smoking, discouraging them from starting to smoke
- Helps those who want to quit. Being around smokefree areas can help those who have quit smoking to successfully stay smokefree
- Reduces litter. Staff do not have to deal with unpleasant ashtrays or cigarette butt litter
Expectations of a Smoke/Vapefree venue: Here is what you need to do to become a Fresh Air Venue.
- Have clear communication with your staff and customers about your new smokefree outdoor dining area - which the FAP provides!
- Remove ashtrays
- Display smokefree signage in places where they will be most visible
- Have a plan for staff who wish to continue to smoke, for example where they are able to go that isn’t onsite or visible to customers
